August 7, 2025: Daylilies still opening, Standout Annuals, Cream Daylilies, Extra tall 6-29-2017, Dante at the arbor
While we’re past peak season, there is still thousands of blooms and hundreds of varieties in bloom. In fact there are still daylilies just starting to bloom. There will still be a strong bloom through August and into September.
Starting next week we’ll be open Friday-Sunday 10-5pm

Lobelia america (my favorite Lobelia) creates a nice blue focal point, with a mass of Dahlia blooms and tall red Amaranth to complete a living flower wall.
Amaranth, Scotch Thistle (silver) and Catnip (Nepeta cataria), create another wall to one of my “garden rooms”
Every year i plant a variety of annuals every spring. Early in the season I question the value of such plantings and my sanity for expending so much effort on these plantings. But come August, I really appreciate them. While the daylilies are still blooming, the annuals come into their own. Creating masses of colors and stunning focal points, they really are quite eye catching.
Two of this years stand outs, are Amaranth tricolor and my seed grown Dahlias.
The Amaranth sports dark red stems and foliage and grows to an impressive 4 feet. They work great for delineating the edges of the beds and creating a “garden room” feel to the gardens.
The Dalhias are incredibly floriferous this year and have produced masses of blooms in a range of colors.
Near White or Cream daylilies are ideal for accents in the garden. Used as a backbone to contrast with blue perennials or other colors they provide a “cool” color to a garden planting. And as a bonus in the evening and at twilight they shine in the waning light, creating a moonlight effect.
Olallie Brother Byron: This creamy daylily begins blooming in early July and consistantly blooms again in September
Olallie Snowstorm: blooming in early August, Olallie Snowstorm has incredibly thick substanced flowers that look almost sculpted. The green throat adds to the singular beauty of each bloom
Olallie Carol & Ken Faith: Beginning in mid August this creamy daylily will provide cool color into September. Olallie Carol & Ken Faith have nicely sculpted blooms with recurved petals.
Olallie Nikki’s Song: This is another early August blooming cream. But what sets this dayliliy apart, is it’s dense bloom and fast increase. A high bud count accounts for it’s spectacular showing.
It’s no secret that I love tall daylilies.6-29-2017 is a perfect example. Starting in late July and blooming into September, this is a perfect later season extra tall daylily. Scapes grow to 70″ and have a wonderful candlebra branching.
Every year I plant a mix of vines that grow up my metal arbor at the entrance of my barn. It’s a transition point from the inside to the outside that creates a “magical” entrance almost like a cave entrance to my barn house. This year I focused on Pole beans and and as such am hoping to harvest beans right outside my kitchen door.
Dante fits right in as if he’s a wild animal waiting and wondering about food.
