Mass of Earlies, Hosta and Daylily, Olallie Early Eyezones, A very nice red, Catalpa, Dante saunters

This is kind of cheating, as this is my old extra early bed from my upper field, but you can see that a mass of blooms in June is possible.

I can always count on this group to bloom earlier than almost anything else.

From those daylilies and others, I have developed spectacular early blooming hybrids (see below).

The weather has been perfect too. Warm with a bit of rain. The lilies are popping up scapes everywhere. 

The Garden House will be open for the this weekend.

I’ve got lots of interesting, potted perennials that I grew from seed.

I always talk about how adaptable daylilies are. Here is a perfect example. A daylily happily growing and blooming in a location suitable for Hostas, which typically need relatively good shade.

Olallie Kendall Marie: Very showy with a red eyezone contrasting with pale creamy yellow blooms. Good grower too.

Olallie Simon Moses: The light yellow blooms contrast strongly with the large red eyezone.

Olallie Dearest Wendy: Another great early eyezone type. This hybrid produces scapes that are taller than the clump which really shows off the smaller flowers of this daylily.

Olallie Emma’s Pride: Shorter, but the color is clear and bright. One of my favorite early reds.

Catalpa: I love this tree for a number of reasons. First I dug this tree as a little sapling from the side of the railroad tracks in Brattleboro. It’s now a large tree with masses of blooms.

Second it makes a good season marker, as I see Catalpa trees all over southern Vermont and can see where it’s blooming before my tree, giving me a sense of how my season compares to other areas.

and lastly it is featured as the middle name of a special little fellow: Ferdinand!

Here’s a nice little vignette ala Dante. He’s out in the morning with the dogs. Dogs come in, after a bit I call him. Dante comes but of course, he’s got to demonstrate that he’s not in a hurry, sniffing everything he can and the gingerly sauntering through my little backyard vegetable garden, to be let in and fed.
